There exists a Holy Smokes! trinity in the music writing industry: Richard Taruskin, Lester Bangs, Andy Doe. Andy Doe is the now out of the closet mild mannered Clark Kent behind Proper Discord's Superman. You saw it here first, heard me say it first: There will never be a greater writer and pontificator on Western Classical Music than Richard Taruskin. There will never be a greater reviewer of Rock and Roll than Lester Bangs. There will never be a greater blogger of the music industry than Andy Doe. Why? Because they LOVE Music, vomit their instincts with wit and their brainiac intelligence AND THEY DO NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT HOW THEY MIGHT OFFEND YOUR DELICATE SENSIBILITIES IN THE PROCESS!!!!! Get this through your heads (bitches), when you kiss up to the (wo)man and alter your art, it shows and your art sucks (assuming you were creating from a basis of instinct and emotion in the first place, vs. academic bullshit or reading the market or). Because they have a sense of humor about themselves and their work is infused with their personality and their human flaws which they accept and share with great glee. Which led to my first A-HA! When was the last time the Classical Music milieu - presenters, sponsors, composers, performers, had this kind of self-acceptance and human-ness resulting in good humor - and shared it with the audience?
