My great experiment taking 4 months off from practicing piano to cycle, hike, garden failed. I was doing well the first 2 weeks - could find partners galore to indulge my outdoor activities back to back. I'd finish one 2 hour walk just in time to cycle the hills just in time to be back to teach just in time to get done and take another walk.
And then my friends' patience ran out.
GET A GIG!!!!!!!!!!
STOP BOTHERING US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So my solution was to say yes to interesting projects and serendipitous opportunities. I think this is what healthy compromise feels like: I'm not quite able to get in the quantity of fix I need for either addiction - the outdoor activities or the indoor practicing - but it feels balanced.
Btw, yard and garden are a total FAIL. As one of my friends says, I am a haus-fraud.

Maria, I fell off my chair laughing at your punchline, then immediately forwarded it to four close friends who all qualify as authentic haus frauen (yeah, their gardens are lovely, and their meals are tasty and I don't think I've seen a dustbunny anywhere on the premises), and to boot, all are German or closely related! so, it was a perfectly wonderful joke which made five more women laugh. thank you!
